| PLASTICULTURE - AN INITIATIVE BY PLASTINDIA FOUNDATION |
- Plasticulture is an initiative by Plastindia Foundation which will create a credible platform across India with an aim to conserve water increase productivity while providing more income and security through use of plastics in agriculture to the agriculturist.
- The long term objective is to ensure that precious natural resource like water is conserved while increasing farm yield by use of modern techniques in Plasticulture. This is an ambitious plan for the participation of plastics in agriculture in the second green revolution of India.
- Plasticulture will be devoted to sustained promotion encouraging the larger community of farmers to practice PLASTICULTURE innovations, creating an impact on the yield of agricultural produce of India, enhancing the shelf life of yield and be an integral part of the second green revolution in India.
- Plastindia Foundation with NABARD is working on a proposal to adopt 1,400 farmers, whose land holdings range from 4 - 8 acres, for Drip Irrigation intervention across 16 villages in Aurangabad. The aim is to bring about 7,000 Acres of land under drip irrigation.
- Plasticulture will act as a catalyst between the farmer and the Indian Plastics Industry by organising exhibitions in specific identified regions. Here plastics in agriculture will be demonstrated and deployed over period of time so that the farmer can see the inherent benefits. Various local farmer groups would be involved in this activity which aims more than to create awareness of Plasticulture but also persuade him to set up the same.
- As a pilot project the exhibition will be held in 7 villages in Jalna district of Maharashtra. The plan envisages that this will then be replicated in a district in Tamil Nadu and Gujarat in the next 15 months.

Plastindia Foundation's "Plasticulture" is scheme whereby farmers are provided with drip irrigiation facility and also shown the benefits of using them.
Plastindia Plasticulture activity is being done in association with the Organisation of Plastic Processors of India. Plastindia Foundation, in association with NABARD and Dilasa, a n NGO, has identified 16 villages covering 1400 farmers at Aurangabad District. Farmers will be provided loan by NABARD through the NGO, with a subsidy from Plastindia, to undertake drip irrigation for an area of 1 Hectare each. Work on distributing the funds and providing the drip irrigation has begun in full earnest.
With a view to show the benefits of using drip irrigation, 8 villages have been identified in Jalna, where a demo plant of 1 acre in each village will be put up with drip irrigation. Simultaneously, exhibitions will be held showcasing uses of plastics in agriculture, machines used in agriculture etc. This activity will be rolled out by the end of April 2011.
Both these models of our Plasticulture efforts are to help marginal farmers save water through drip irrigation and not only increase yield per crop but also put them in a position to grow more than 1 crop per year.
The two projects mention above are our pilot projects. If successful, Plastindia Plasticulture is committed to implementing both models in other areas as well.
