The Foundation encourages NGO's  and other city corporations managing Plastic waste management.

During  the Plasticon Awards organized by Plastindia Foundation special award titled “Green City Award”  was given to City of Kozhikode for their exemplary work on the system of waste management involving NGOs and providing source of income for waste collectors. A special award was also given to Stree Mukti Sanghatna, a NGO, Mumbai for work done on Plastic Waste Collection.

Green City Award

Calicut City Corporation – Calicut, Kerala

The Calicut Municipal Corporation successfully implemented a system in which the plastics and other recyclable wastes are segregated at source and made it a source of income for Kudumbasree Units (DWCUA units) who engaged in collection of segregated wastes in the city.

Each household was provided with two Plastic bins of 15 litters – one white and one green – free of cost for depositing biodegradable and non-biodegradable wastes separately. There are about 72000 households in the city. Out of which 70 percent of houses are provided with the bins.

The Kudumbasree Units (a DWCUA project) will collect the segregated wastes by organizing door-to-door collection. There are 73 such units who engaged in door-to-door collection. Each group consists of 10 members (all are women from BPL – Below Poverty Line – families). Each Kudumbasree unit was provided with two Cargo Auto rickshaws and 6 numbers of 50 litter plastic bins for the collection of waste from the households and business establishments (primary collection). These plastics are collected and sold to companies who are engaged in recycling process. Each Kudumbasree unit earns about Rs. 1500/- per month only by selling the plastic wastes! About 730 families below poverty line derive their income from the collection of segregated waste at source.
